Dry ice blasting cleans without leaving secondary waste. The media sublimates on impact, so what is left on the floor is whatever came off the part — no grit to recover, no water to dry, no solvent to dispose of. That is the entire economic case, and it is a strong one for equipment that cannot be disassembled or wetted.

Pellet Size and Consumption Rate

Blasting equipment is particular about media. Most machines specify pellets at 3 mm (roughly 1/8 inch) or smaller, and feeding oversized pellets is a reliable way to jam a feeder mid-job.

Consumption runs meaningfully higher than people plan for. A representative mid-size unit feeds in the range of 0.66 to 1.32 pounds per minute, which works out to roughly 40 to 80 pounds per hour of continuous trigger time. Actual use is lower because no operator holds the trigger continuously, but sizing a delivery off nameplate feed rate rather than optimism is the safer approach.

This is also why retail dry ice is usually the wrong source for blasting. Consumer-oriented suppliers stock block and larger pellets, not blast-compatible media.

Timing Delivery to the Job

Dry ice cannot be stockpiled. It sublimates continuously, so media bought a week ahead is partly gone before the job starts, and what remains has lost pellet integrity.

The practical approach is delivery timed close to the work, in the quantity the job actually needs. For a contractor running sequential jobs, that means supply scheduling is part of the bid, not an afterthought.

We work on scheduled or on-demand delivery and provide insulated containers. Tell our team your job calendar and expected trigger hours and we will build the cadence around it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size dry ice pellets do blasting machines need?
Most blasting equipment specifies pellets at 3 mm (about 1/8 inch) or smaller. Oversized pellets can jam the feeder. Check your machine's documentation, since requirements vary by unit.
How much dry ice does blasting consume per hour?
A representative mid-size machine feeds roughly 0.66 to 1.32 pounds per minute, which is about 40 to 80 pounds per hour of continuous trigger time. Real-world use is lower since the trigger is not held continuously, but sizing off nameplate feed rate avoids running short.
Can I buy dry ice ahead and store it for a job?
Not usefully. Dry ice sublimates continuously and pellets lose integrity as they shrink. Delivery timed close to the job in the quantity actually needed is the workable approach.
