Cold chain in life sciences is a documentation problem as much as a temperature problem. The sample either stayed in range or it did not, and the paperwork has to show which. That puts a different weight on supply consistency than it does in most industries.

Dry Ice for Biological and Clinical Transport

Dry ice sublimates at −78.5°C, which sits comfortably below the roughly −70°C ±10°C that ultra-low-temperature biological material typically requires. That is why it remains the default for specimen and vaccine transport despite the handling burden.

Pellet size matters more here than in most applications. Smaller pellets pack more densely around irregularly shaped payloads and give more uniform contact, which is why nuggets in the 10 mm range are commonly specified for vaccine shipments rather than block.

The operational constraint is the same one every cold chain faces: in a temperature-controlled parcel, dry ice remains effective for roughly three to five days, and that window shrinks with every opening and every hour of ambient dwell.

Ethanol Grades for Laboratory and Pharmaceutical Use

Three specifications get conflated in ethanol procurement, and they are independent of one another.

Proof describes water content. 200 proof is anhydrous; 190 proof sits at the ethanol-water azeotrope at roughly 95% ethanol. Denaturant status describes whether toxic or bittering agents have been added — and no denatured formula is appropriate for a product that will be ingested, inhaled, or applied. Purity grade describes which compendium the material is certified against: USP for pharmaceutical use, FCC for food, ACS for analytical reagent work.

USP-grade ethanol is tested to United States Pharmacopeia monograph standards. Note that the USP Alcohol and Dehydrated Alcohol monographs added a methanol identification test effective September 2020, positioned such that each lot requires testing.

We are TTB registered for industrial alcohol and supply in 5, 55, and 275 gallon containers, with USP grade available.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you supply USP grade ethanol?
Yes. We supply 200 proof and 190 proof ethanol with USP grade available, in 5 gallon, 55 gallon, and 275 gallon containers, and we are TTB registered for industrial alcohol supply.
What temperature does dry ice maintain?
Dry ice sublimates at −78.5°C (−109°F), below the roughly −70°C range typically required for ultra-low-temperature biological material. In a temperature-controlled parcel it generally remains effective for three to five days, depending on insulation and handling.
Should I use pellets or block for specimen shipping?
Pellets are generally preferred for specimen transport because they pack densely around irregular payloads and give more uniform contact. Nuggets around 10 mm are commonly specified for vaccine shipments. Block sublimates more slowly but contacts the payload less evenly.
What is the difference between USP and FCC grade ethanol?
Both describe undenatured ethanol tested against a purity monograph. USP targets pharmaceutical standards under the United States Pharmacopeia; FCC targets food-ingredient standards under the Food Chemicals Codex. Which you need depends on your end product, not on the proof.
